President's Message - March 2010
Hello everyone I am your new president for the M.G.S.A. I have been on the board since 2006, and have been in the turfgrass industry for 23 years. I never thought I would run for the board never mind becoming the president. I have seen big changes in the industry over my career such as minimum wage from $2.80 up to $8.50/hour. There is more competition with new courses opening up as the golfers seem to be evolving into a green fee world. I would like to acknowledge the efforts that Michael Trager put forth on the board as he really did give his all to better the M.G.S.A. Mike did a lot of things to improve us as a board. As for me I am still married to Stacey for now 12 years we have two boys Jordan (10) and Matthew (8). I am also currently the icemaker in Selkirk at our curling club. Between the boys in hockey and curling there's not much down time to rest up for the golf season. We have had a pretty good winter this year and March has started out beautiful we have seen record temperatures so far. I always seem to get that spring fever this time of year. It feels good to get back at the course you pour your heart into. (especially before the golfers come out) I encourage all of you to attend all of our M.G.S.A events this year, make a goal of bringing out your assistants, mechanics or even a worker who gives you a little more than others. You will see that it improves your workers outlook at your course and give them more pride in what they do for you. It is my pleasure to have Craig Campbell, Greg Mitchell and Darren Dundas as our newest recruits on the M.G.S.A board I know you guys will do great. A special thank you goes out to Darren Kalyniuk as he did a tremendous job as our president for the past two years, your shoes will be hard to fill as you dedicated so much time to improve our association. Also to Bob Hamm as he does so much behind the scenes, he keeps us all on schedule in all we do, we couldn't do it without you. I hope you all have a great start to the 2010 season. If any concerns develop please fell free to call me. Thank you. Ian Brooks 785-3588
