Each year a field of 144 golf course management professionals competes for the Tom Johnston Trophy. This prestigious title is named after the 1969 President of the CGSA who played host to the inaugural Fall Field Day at his home course at Carling Lake Golf Club in Brownsburg, Quebec. Tom served the CGSA in its early days and was one of the 49 superintendents who gathered in Lachute in 1966 to form the Association. The award was donated by the Quebec Golf Superintendents Association. “The is one of our Association’s most significant annual events”, says Robert Burrows, AGS, MS, CGCS, CGSA President and Superintendent at Banff Springs Golf Club at the Fairmont Banff Springs Resort in Banff, Alberta. “This event brings together many of our members from across the country to contest for our national championship. It is a time to compete, network on important association issues and learn from one another in a setting that promotes fair play and camaraderie.” Kerry C. Watkins, 6th Superintendent at the St. Charles Country Club will host the 2009 event, the 43rd in the Association’s history. “It will be a great honour for me personally, professionally and for our club to add the CGSA Fall Field Day to the national championship events that have been hosted here at the St. Charles Country Club”, said Watkins. “I look forward to preparing the golf course and to welcoming superintendents from across the country and internationally.” The St. Charles Country Club was established in 1904 and was originally designed by Donald Ross (1919), Alister MacKenzie (1931) and Norman Woods (1954), each of whom designed nine holes. The club is currently conducting a thorough assessment of the golf course working with various industry specialists to develop an action plan for the near future focusing on the architectural restoration of bunkers and greens, irrigation upgrades, the drainage program, a turf quality improvement plan, a tree care program and overall course aesthetics.
The CGSA is a not-for-profit professional association committed to environmentally sustainable golf course management through the professional development of its members.
