CGSA Report, June 2010

CGSAReport
- Kerry Watkins
CGSA Manitoba Director
Over the past two years, the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association, through its Environment Committee and the Board of Directors, has been working to develop policy statements as the basis for its presentations and responses to government initiatives on environmental issues of interest and importance to the golf industry. The following policies are available on the CGSA website at www.golfsupers.com and or through Bob Hamm, Executive Director of the MGSA. They are:
• The Use of IPM to Manage Golf Courses;
• Nutrient Use on Golf Courses;
• The Use of Pesticides as a Component of Golf Course Management, and;
• Water Use Management
Policy.
As a follow up to these policy statements, the CGSA will be publishing three guidelines. The guideline topics are:
• Managing Re-Entry Intervals After Pesticide Use on the Golf Course;
• The Value of Golf Course Properties in the Community, and;
• CGSA Member Advocacy Guideline
Just a friendly reminder to all superintendent members of the CGSA. Please review your eligibility for obtaining the Accredited Golf Superintendent (AGS) designation and or Master Superintendent (MS) certification through the CGSA. I have just recently earned the AGS by passing the examination. There has been some interest from some superintendents but hopefully more people get involved and pursue this very attainable accreditation process. What an achievement it would be if Manitoba Superintendents lead the way for newly accredited superintendents during 2010. If you are interested in accreditation please contact me or Mrs. Lori Micucci from the CGSA office to discuss.
If you are interested in attending the 2010 CGSA 44th Fall Field held at historic and world renowned Banff Springs on September 14th• Please act now to assure your spot in the event. If you have questions or comments regarding the CGSA initiatives or activities please do not hesitate to contact myself by email kerry. watkins@stcharlescountryclub. ca or by phone 889-0899. I will do my best to find answers to your inquiries. Respectfully Submitted by

CGSA Report - March 2010

CGSA Report

The 43rd CGSA annual conference and trade show was well represented by Manitoba,  and a highlight that will be remember for ever was the Presidents reception with everyone in Canada out fits and witnessed the gold on home soil and the GCSAA executive singing the Canadian anthem.  The conference committee put together a first rate speakers program and attendees capitalizing on the great educational and networking opportunities throughout the conference.  Congratulation is in order for Manitoba’s own Greg Holden who has been elected President of the CGSA.  The remainder of the CGSA executive elected for Vice President was Debbie Amirault from Mayfair Country Club in Edmonton for Secretary-Treasurer was Tim Kubash from Salmon Arm Golf and Country Club, Salmon Arm, British Columbia.  Please mark your calendar to continue your professional development and attend the 44th CGSA conference and trade show in Vancouver from March 7 to 11, 2011.  On to business of the CGSA continued discussions took place regarding a national standard and program for Integrated Pest Management certification.  As more information on this topic becomes available I will be sure to pass it on to the MGSA.  The CGSA is currently finalizing advocacy papers on relevant topics pertaining to golf course management for use by individual golf clubs, provincial/regional associations.  This will prove to be a great benefit and a great reason to become a CGSA member.  A reminder to all superintendent members of the CGSA.  Please review your eligibility for obtaining the Accredited Golf Superintendent (AGS) designation and or Master Superintendent (MS) Designation through the CGSA.  A goal of mine over the next year is to earn the AGS designation (see what’s all involved in the process) and for Manitoba Superintendents to lead the way for newly accredited superintendents.  If you are interested in accreditation please contact my self or the a representative from the CGSA office to discuss.  Please mark your calendars for the 2010 CGSA 44th Fall Field to be held at historic and world renowned Banff Springs September 13th.  If you have questions or comments regarding the CGSA initiatives or activities please do not hesitate to contact myself by email kerry.watkins@stcharlescountryclub.ca or by phone 889-0899.  I will do my best to find answers to your inquiries.
I look forward to keeping the MGSA current on CGSA initiatives and activities.
Good luck to everyone this spring and let’s hope weather cooperates for good golf and golf course maintenance.

CGSA Report October 2009

CGSAReport

CGSA Manitoba Director
With 43rd CGSA Fall Field Day an event of the past, I can report that the event was a great success on all levels. First off, half the field was from Manitoba and the event was sold out! A big thanks goes out to the MGSA and the board for great support for the MGSA social evening and for the food stations during the Fall Field Day event. Congrats to Manitoba's own Tony Feheregyhazi for winning the overall low net and to Thom Charters for winning the overall national champion.
Prior to the FFD the CGSA had two full days of board meetings and some information that was made public. First off the 2009 award earners are as follows

Superintendent of the Year Mr. David Boyd, Future Superintendent of the Year Mr. Cameron Kusiek and to the John B. Steel earner Mr. Vince Gillis. Congratulations goes out to all award earners.
Some of the initiatives the CGSA along with committees will have available for you the superintendent to use are: Re-entry Support Paper when products are applied on your golf course, national recognized IPM program, Golf and Environment papers and presentations. All may be available for CGSA Superintendent members in the near future.
Events to mark on your calendars are the 2010 CGSA conference to be held in Toronto from February 6th to March 2nd and the 44th CGSA Fall Field Day to be held September 14th at Banff Springs. Please mark these dates and take advantage of becoming a CGSA member and the new member rates for these events.
If you have any inquiries please do not hesitate to contact my self at 889-0899 or by email at kerry.watkins@stcharlescountryclub.ca. I will do my best to find answers to your inquiries.
